TOPIC

NAME

format - The format used for the man-pages.

DESCRIPTION

The manual pages of NannyMUD are stored in XML format. XML is
a three-letter acronym meaning 'extensible markup language'.
It draws on experiences form HTML and SGML. The WWW is full of
materials related to those; look at www.w3c.org and
	www.xml.org for details.

The XML files are parsed each morning by an external program,
which builds some databases and also 'R2R' (Ready To Read)
files. The latter files are parsed as far as they can be
before presentation, making the presentation job easy for the
	presenting object.

The XML files are (2000-12-22) stored under /doc/xml. Look at
some files there to see how it looks; XML uses plain-text
markup. At the top of the file is a system specification. You
can look at that on the web to see how the different parts of
	the document are related.
